Mixed Messages

Last Wednesday, I visited the clinic for a post-IUI scan of my ovaries. The first time I did an IUI at this office, the nurse told me that the purpose of the ultrasound was to see if I was producing enough progesterone. If the ovaries measured above a certain size, that indicated sufficient progesterone production. If the ovaries measured smaller than the desired size, then an HCG booster shot would need to be administered. The nurse I saw this past week gave me a completely different interpretation of this scan and its purposes. According to her, my enlarged ovaries mean that I am slightly hyper-stimulated and that it is not safe for me to take the standard-protocol HCG booster. So according to the first explanation, a bigger ovary measurement is a good thing; way to go, ovaries, no more HCG needed! But according to the second explanation, a bigger ovary measurement is bad news; sorry, no more nice HCG for you. Which is it? I don't know. How much affect does it have on the ultimate outcome of the cycle? I don't know that either. But I'm content to wait and see; I go in for the beta on Monday.

"But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord.
At an acceptable time, O God,
in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness."
(Psalm 69:13)

Wow, what a beautiful verse. I need to copy that one down. I don't know anything about the ovaries/HSG dilemma, but regardless, I hope it doesn't affect your outcome (unless it helps!)

I am sorry I do not know anything about why they do this. But I always heard that post-IUI utrasounds were for the purpose of checking for a corpus luteum to confirm that ovulation did indeed occur. But I want you to know I am praying for you.

We are praying for you, Andrea! This is a wonderful verse. I'm praying for you and will be praying for you over the weekend and on Monday. We love you.

By the way, we are going to Austin this weekend! Eric is going to the reunion, and my dad helped pay for plane tickets so me and the crew can tag along (not to the reunion, though--that thing is expensive!!). Wish we all could get together one of these days...us and Waco friends. Some day!!

Waiting patiently with you, and trusting that the Great Physician knows what's going on, even when we don't.

Hey- thanks for commenting on my blog! That is so confusing! I hate it when situations like that happen- it makes me so frustrated!

I haven't had any ultrasounds after my IUI's so I'm not much help.

Good luck with the beta! I'll be thinking of you!

Still praying, babe.

But I do think your clinic should give you a clear answer as to the purpose of that scan....

Don't know girl, but my ovaries have always been humongous after stim & I got the feeling (idea) that it was due to being hyperstimulated which I'm prone to due to PCOS. Never heard the progesterone angle but who knows... here's hoping & praying monday brings good news

that is a great verse. I thought that in post-iui ultrasounds they would be looking for a corpus luteum, which is what produces progesterone. It does make sense to me that if an ovary was larger that they might think it was hyper-stimulated. So I guess there is no need for hcg, but I think it is a good thing lol. BABY DUST!!

hi, i just came across your blog and don't know if you still need answers but both observations are correct... a bigger ovary measurement is a good thing, no HCG is needed, but then if your ovaries over produce, get larger than "normal" or too big then it's not good and you don't want your ovaries to produce more than 20 eggs...it's like, you don't want to be too thin and you don't want to be too fat, just "normal"... i hope your appt with a new RE goes well today. will pray for you. j--
